1. What is the scholarship application process like?
Please read through all scholarship information before applying. Eligible senior mentees are required to complete the "SLI Scholarship Application" and "SLI Financial Questionnaire" found below and are required to email both forms to Kitty Stalberg at [email protected]. Mentee graduates currently enrolled in college are also required to complete both the questionnaire and application forms and email them to Kitty Stalberg.
The scholarship award application asks for general information, community involvements, standardized test scores, your preferred school choices, and required essay questions. The financial questionnaire asks for you/your family's financial information and estimated cost of attendance if any.
2. When are the application materials due?
Application materials are due no later than April 6, 2012, 11:59 pm. Because there is a small time frame in which the SLI Scholarship Committee can meet in addition to meeting applicants' need, scholarship assistance will NOT be considered beyond this date - no exceptions.
3. What does it mean to be in "good standing?" What factors are considered in a competitive applicant?
The SLI Scholarship Selection Committee looks at demonstrated financial and legal need in addition to estimated cost of attendance at the applicant's preferred colleges. In addition, they consider performance, improvement, and completion of SLI's academic components, Sophomore Composition 101 and College Prep Seminar (formerly Early College.) They consider candidates who have shown regular attendance to, overall effort in, and quality work during SLI events held at UNC and meetings held at their respective SLI site high school. Other factors considered are involvement in extracurricular activities, community service, standardized test scores, and academic performance in their respective high school.
The committee also favors clear choices and decisions - an application indicating commitment to a particular school and bottom line financial need has greater chance of consideration than indecision/non-commitment. SLI also makes a commitment to mentee graduates currently enrolled in university. Thus, the selection committee considers these mentee graduates in the same pool as current senior mentees.
4. Are SLI scholarships provided to all SLI mentees?
Unfortunately, no. The SLI scholarship process is competitive and does not automatically provide scholarship funds to any particular SLI metnee.
5. Is priority given to certain SLI mentees?
Students whose legal combined with financial situation make it difficult to obtain financial aid will be given priority. However, any eligible mentee is encouraged to apply. If there are leftover funds, the committee considers giving book and incidental awards and has done so in the past.
6. How many scholarships are available? How much is each scholarship? Are they full scholarships?
The number of scholarships depends on the total amount of scholarship funds available every year. This amount varies year to year, and the amount of each scholarship also varies year to year. SLI scholarships are intended as partial, NOT full scholarships. Total scholarship funds for a particular student may add up to a full scholarship when combined with assistance from the school, outside scholarships, and/or SLI funds.
7. Are the scholarships four-year scholarships? Are they renewable?
Unfortunately, SLI scholarships are one-time scholarships whose amounts vary year to year, depending on available funds.
8. How much was the fund in previous years? How much has it been in current years?
When SLI first started, the fund was only a few thousand dollars. The 2010-2011 year raised approximately $70,000 in scholarship funds, and 2011-2012 has raised approximately the same amount thus far.
9. Who comprises the SLI Scholarship Selection Committee?
The committee is comprised of at least 50% non-SLI affiliated members. These members are often members of the community or work in areas of higher education. Mentors of senior mentees and/or members of the executive board may also be present during the selection process to provide additional insight into applications.
10. How are SLI scholarship funds raised?
SLI raises funds for scholarships in a number of ways. Operational and Advisory Board members approach foundations and private donors (e.g., the Oak Foundation), SLI's Development & Expansion and SLI-FUND committees hold fundraisers, SLI's staff writes proposals, and we partner with institutions (e.g., NC Wesleyan, NC A&T, Richmond University) to advocate for scholarship funds and/or matching funds for mentees.
